GLP-1 medications can be incredibly effective for weight loss.
But losing weight and feeling better aren’t necessarily the same thing.
There’s something we don’t talk about enough: fat isn’t just where our bodies store extra energy. Adipose tissue can also store certain fat-soluble environmental pollutants.
When we lose a significant amount of fat—particularly when weight loss happens quickly—some of these stored compounds can be mobilized back into circulation.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t lose weight. And it doesn’t mean GLP-1s are inherently bad.
But it does mean how we support the body while losing weight matters too.
You Lost the Weight. So Why Don’t You Feel Better?
If you’re dropping weight quickly but you’re exhausted, nauseated, constipated, losing muscle, barely eating, or simply don’t feel well, it’s worth paying attention.
Some of these symptoms can be side effects of the medication itself. Rapid weight loss can also place different demands on the body.
Adequate protein and nutrition, hydration, regular bowel movements, preserving muscle mass, and making sure you’re getting the nutrients your body needs still matter—even when the medication is doing much of the work of getting the weight off.
There’s More Than One Way to Lose Weight
GLP-1 medications can be a helpful tool, but they aren’t the only approach to weight loss.
Especially in our 40s and beyond, stubborn weight can be connected to hormones, insulin resistance, stress, sleep, inflammation, thyroid function, nutrition, and loss of muscle mass.
And medication isn’t the only option. There’s a lot we can explore from a more holistic perspective—from intermittent fasting and uncovering food sensitivities to looking at hormones, insulin resistance, inflammation, thyroid function, stress, sleep, nutrition, and muscle mass.
Sometimes it’s worth looking beyond the number on the scale and asking a different question:
What does my body need to function better?
Because weight loss can be part of getting healthier.
But it doesn’t have to be the whole story.
